Use Nostalgia to Foster Connection

Team Connection: Tap Into Nostalgia

Try this: Have your team share their most memorable, shocking, or even crazy Halloween stories!  What were they dressed up as when they were a kid?  What are their kids wearing, what were their favorite candies, movies, or even music? (Monster Mash? Thriller?)

Have them bring in photos of themselves, their kids, and even their pets! This will reveal more of the full “person”, and people are joyful when sharing fun things that are important to them!

Why This Works

Nostalgia can bring us back to simpler times, and remembering joyful things.  We also don't remember the stresses so much, hence why our memories are usually rosier than they were in real life.  In addition, the lightness of Halloween can bring out the playfulness in everyone!  Amp it up with some fun punch, mini candies, and of course pumpkin anything.

Why It's Great for Team Engagement

Sharing these stories helps uncover common threads that foster connection and appreciation among team members. When we work together we're often only acquainted with the work "Brandon" and not the Brandon who dressed up as a ninja at least 5 times as a kid!  This added depth and dimension fills in the blanks that create a better picture of the whole person, which creates more patience, understanding, and connection between team members. (Which helps collaboration and cooperation!)
